Researchers from the Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis (CEBRA) will present a seminar detailing their landmark report into the present-day costs and future threats facing NSW from invasive species.
Estimating the costs of invasive species is important for biosecurity decision-making and resource allocation. As part of a broad, state-level invasive species cost assessment for NSW, an expedited systematic review/rapid review was conducted to compile cost estimates from published and grey literature, to produce a comprehensive database of cost estimates either within or including NSW. The report shows that current invasive species costs within NSW are in the scale of billions of dollars annually and increasing, particularly for agriculture, and emphasises the importance of also considering environmental costs.
Additionally, the report highlights how climate change is expected to influence biological invasions by modifying their establishment and spread rates, as well as their impacts. The greatest economic and environmental impacts associated with biological invasions in NSW over the next decades are likely to come from exotic threats, yet to establish within the country, but whose probability of being introduced into climatically suitable areas is increasing under climate change.
